First grade is getting an introduction to Economics! They are learning new vocabulary such as goods, services, producers, buyers, barter and scarce. We are currently in the middle of a super engaging exercise where the students get to earn their own money! Throughout each day the students will try to earn money for things like completing homework, getting a compliment from an adult in the building, etc. The students are learning how to save the money they earn so they can purchase items from the “classroom store”. The classroom store includes items like pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. There is also a chance to visit the prize box! This activity teaches the students the importance of having to save enough money for the things they need (like a pencil or eraser) before they can purchase a want (like a visit to the prize box). They are also getting the chance to practice their Math skills by counting the coins and dollars they earn. First grade is doing a fantastic job showing a sense of responsibility during this time as they get to have a better understanding about the world around them!
