Each year St. Nicholas visits SJS on his feast day and today was no different. In early afternoon, all of the students placed a shoe in the hallway in hopes of receiving a small treat. Around 1:00pm, bells could be heard throughout the halls and shortly thereafter the students discovered that their shoes were filled with candy. The look of awe and surprise is always priceless!
St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children. He was always generous to the poor. Once Nicholas heard that a man who had become very poor intended to abandon his three daughters to a life of sin. He went out in the night, threw a bag of gold into the window of the sleeping father and hurried away. This is where the tradition of leaving small gifts in shoes on the eve or feast day of St. Nicholas is rooted. The word Santa Claus also comes from his name.
